Vol #16  April 18, 2016

Thank-you for praying for things that are needed during our home assignment year.  We are pleased to report that God has supplied both a townhouse to rent and a used car to purchase.  In addition to inviting you to join us in thanking God that these major needs are met, we also want to thank the people who worked hard to help connect us with the landlord and the car owners..

Last Friday, Kathy-Lu and Elaine were praying during one of their regular prayer times.  As they prayed for the church that is being started, one of the prayers was that we would have women begin to attend.  So far it is only men who have committed to attend regularly.  Two days later, a couple who are  neighbours of Albert and Elaine came to church.  Please pray that “D” and “H” will continue to come as part of their search for life’s answers.  Please pray that other men and women will search for the True God and find Him.

Vol #15  April 11, 2016

We often think that it would be nice to keep the status quo and not need to face change in our lives.  But the Bible and our Christian faith requires us to request God to bring change into our lives.  We want Him to save us, to forgive us, to indwell us, to empower us, to make us more like Jesus, etc.  The stability in our lives is not to come from owning a house or having a long-term career.  We are to rely on God as the one thing in our lives that does not change.

As we make arrangements for our move back to Canada for a one year home assignment, we can feel overwhelmed with decision-making, the filling out of forms, the scheduling of speaking engagements, saying good-bye to friends, etc.  Please pray that we all will find our stability in Christ.

April 8 marked the start of the annual Matzu pilgrimage.  The event is to pay homage to a widely worshipped deity and has many cultural events now associated with it.  It is the largest Matzu worshipping event in the whole world.  Although the procession does not pass through Baozhong, it is a major influence on all the towns in west central Taiwan when Baozhong is situated.  Please pray that the True Light of the World (Christ) will push back the darkness and that even during this event people would come to faith in Christ.  Pray that the Jesus-followers in families where this deity is revered will have a strong testimony.  Pray that people will be curious enough to ask about the hope that believers have in Christ.

We have been celebrating the resurrection of Christ for a number of days.  When telling the story of the first Easter in the classroom, a student asked:  “After Jesus came alive, did He die again?” After hearing the response that Jesus did not die again and is still alive, he surprisedly asked the follow-up question:  “He is still alive?”  When we answered “Yes! That is why we can trust Him and pray to Him,” the children were very happy and excited.  Please continue to pray that God will use the truth in the stories to create faith in their hearts.

We are sensing a need to recruit the following people to join our ministry team.  Would you please pray for God to provide the following workers that are needed in Baozhong:

• MK Teacher – Short-term self-funded native-English-speaker to teach home school curriculum to  two MK girls.  The position is for 9-10 months beginning September 2016.  This is an urgent need.
• Story-teller – Short-term worker to live in Baozhong and tell English Bible stories to elementary students.  Terms run September through January, and February through June.  This is a need for which we have a strong burden.
• Taiwanese Coworker – Full-time Taiwanese who is theologically trained and has a burden for those living in the rural area.  The person must be able to work on a team with international workers and desire to use pastoral gifts to help plant and nurture the church.

Vol #11  March 21, 2016

For our Palm Sunday worship we joined together with the Baozhong Gospel Center church.  We witnessed their church’s first baptism, a friend from the community.  We were able to not only worship together but also to share lunch together.  Please pray with us that God will continue to build His kingdom in Baozhong.

Church Mission Strategy Meetings

We were privileged to be a part of this year’s meetings with pastors from most churches in the Taiwan C&MA March 16=19.  This year there was training on how to faithfully manage church finances.  A retired Taiwanese pastor also shared stories and advice about having a pastoral heart in ministry even as we seek for God to add more people to the church.

Successful Surgery!

Thanks-you for praying for Lorne’s father as he had surgery.  The surgery went well.  He is now recovering at home until the implant can be connected. In about a month he will begin therapy to learn to hear with the new devices.

Planning

A lot of energy is going into planning for home assignment.  We are in final negotiations for a furnished townhouse in Abbotsford.  We are planning travel for General Assembly and other meetings that we will need to attend.  In Taiwan, we are beginning the process of transferring responsibilities to other people.  Please pray for wisdom and that this will all go smoothly.

Vol #11  March 14, 2016

We were privileged to host the children’s club ministry last Saturday.  Four of the children who came did so for the first time.  Pastor Tsou shared practical life skills and also taught them from God’s Word.  The craft was making crepe paper flowers.  Please pray that the seeds of truth that are planted will lead the children toward belief in Jesus.

Lorne’s father will be having ear surgery on March 17.  The recovery time, including learning to hear using the newly implanted device will likely be about 8 weeks.  Please pray that the procedure will be without complications and for Dad’s recovery process.

The Taiwan C&MA will hold in-service-training and strategy discussions with all its pastors this week.  International workers partnering with them are also encouraged to attend.  Please pray that these.will be times of encouragement, equipping, and affirmation for these servants of God.

Vol #10  March 7, 2016

One of the privileges of serving as international workers in Taiwan is the fellowship and teamwork with those from other sending agencies.  Monday through Wednesday, Kathy-Lu will join with women cross-cultural workers from around the island for seminars and mutual encouragement.  Please pray that this will be an event that encourages the hearts of all who attend.

Lorne’s father will be having ear surgery on March 17.  The recovery time, including learning to hear using the newly implanted device will likely be about 8 weeks.  Please pray that the procedure will be without complications and for Dad’s recovery process.

Thank-you for continuing to pray for arrangements being made for housing and transportation while we are on a one-year Home Assignment beginning May 2016.

Vol #9  Feb. 29, 2016

Recently we were able to see participants in our town’s first ever marathon running down our street.  Residents and volunteers were cheering them on.  There was excitement in the air.  The event was considered a success.  Then news came that one of the participants had collapsed and passed away.  It was not the race that a supposedly healthy person expected to be running that day.  They did not know they would be crossing the finish line at the end of their life before they reached 40 years old. We do not know if they were adequately prepared for eternity.

Acts 4:31 records that the Holy Spirit gave the believers boldness to share the good news about Jesus with others. Our prayer is that God will give all of us that same Holy Spirit boldness to share with others so that more people are prepared for their eternal future.

We have been preparing the 2015 event and attendance report to send to the denomination.  It is exciting to see that people have been added to the church in Baozhong over this past year.  God is working and we are excited to be a part of what He is doing.  Please pray that God will continue to add to the number of people attending. May God also help each of us to grow in our faith in this coming year.

Planning for our return to Canada on May 24 for one year of ministry in Canadian churches is happening.  We are thankful for church friends who are assisting us to find housing and a car.  Please pray for wisdom as they look and advise us.
