Leadership Training Sessions are Completed

We’re back in Baozhong and wanting to work on the preparations for teaching English, Bible Story-telling, and connecting with people.  Unfortunately that is going slower than planned because of the flu.  Please pray that we will give ourselves grace to take time to recover and for us to trust God to be able accomplish in a timely manner everything He wants us to do.

A Family Prayer request.

Our daughter Elyssa, who will be married in July, has been experiencing health problems.  After a number of months of investigation she has received a diagnosis from the specialist.  Treatment will happen on March 1.  Please join us in praying that God will heal her, even using the planned treatment to do so.

Trip to Canada

We will be back in Canada and are willing to schedule some weekday meetings to share about global ministries in Taiwan.  (Sundays are all booked.)  Please feel free to write us with invitations and suggestions.  Here are the dates we will be in different areas:

  • Aug 1-9            BC Lower Mainland
  • Aug 10-16        Vancouver Island
  • Aug 19-31        BC Lower Mainland

Transportation needed:  If you know of a car we can use during the month of August, even for part of the time, please let us know.

Praise God!

The Resident Certificate that we have all been waiting for since last August finally arrived in the mail.  We praise God this process is completed and our coworkers can put their whole focus on language learning and planning for future ministry.

Return from Babylon

Camp has finished, the “walls” have been taken down, and we have our memories of a great week! We are thankful for:

  • The Team from Victoria Chinese Alliance who were well-prepared and for the sense of teamwork with us. (They suffered to eat at the same restaurant 3 times in one week!)
  • The excitement and participation of the students.  They enjoyed camp, listened to the stories from the Bible, and were impacted by the love of the leaders.
  • The surprise on the principal’s face when he saw the students sing and present the skit on the final afternoon.  Their participation exceeded his expectations.
  • The glimpses of God working in some individual’s lives.  We are praying for God to do more and to be able to see more.

Praise and Prayer

  • Praise the Lord for health, good weather, safety, and great results at camp.
  • Pray that some students will believe and want to attend Sunday School so that they can learn more.
  • Preparations for Chinese New Year have begun.  Pray that we will be able to use this special time of year to have significant conversations with people.  Sometimes giving out banners creates the opportunity.
  • Summer 2019: We are travelling to Canada for a special event!  Our daughter Elyssa will be marrying Carl Anderson.  We are also available to speak mid-week at some churches in August.  More details next week!

Inside the Walls of Babylon

This is the theme for this week’s camp.  We have 32 campers registered and a team of volunteers from Victoria Chinese Alliance Church.  Stories about Daniel’s courage while in captivity will be used to teach the students.  Please pray each day of camp to be a meaningful experience, helping the students to learn more about believing in and trusting God.

The first day of Camp is successfully completed.  We are all feeling more tired than expected.  Please pray as we all fulfill our roles to complete the week.

Praise and Prayer

  • Praise the Lord that the team has arrived from Canada!  Pray for health and endurance as they provide a full-day program for each of the five days.
  • Pray that some students will believe and want to attend Sunday School so that they can learn more.
  • Preparations for Chinese New Year have begun.  Pray that we will be able to use this special time of year to have significant conversations with people.  Sometimes giving out banners creates the opportunity.

Putting Things Away

This past week we spent time putting away the Christmas decorations.  But we want the reminder of God being with us and the lessons we learned at Christmas to stay with us as we move into the new year.

Jesus, being fully God, moved into the neighbourhood as a man so that He could correct our misconceptions about God and restore the broken relationship.  That’s something we need to remember on a regular basis.  This is the hope we need to share with others.

Please pray for us as we do so.

Praise and Prayer

  • Praise the Lord that the pastoral staff was able to visit May and Ware last week, even helping them to hang a cross on a wall in their home.  Please pray for God to continue to supply healing for Ware and help him understand what it means to believe in Christ.
  • The Short-term Team from Victoria arrives this Saturday!  Please pray for the final preparations and the safe travel of the team.  The students are REALLY excited.  Pray that the January 21-25 camp will help them to believe in Christ as Savior.

Schedule Highlights

  • Jan 17:  FuHsing Elementary English Teaching and Bible Storytelling
  • Jan 19:  Short-term Team arrival.
  • Jan 20: Pastor Joshua is preaching at Baozhong Alliance
  • Jan 21-25:  “Inside the Walls of Babylon”  Elementary Day Camp

Blasting into the New Year

How are you starting your new year?  We managed to stay awake to see the television coverage of the fireworks from various venues around Taiwan.  But more important we have spent some time with our ministry team.  On Wednesday we went bowling and then dropped in to see the space exploration display at the Tropic of Cancer Monument.  We are thankful for coworkers and the opportunity to relax and deepen friendships through recreation times.

Praise and Prayer

  • Pray for May’s husband “Ware.”  He has been having dreams about Christ and it is peaking his interest.  Pray that God will continue to work making him curious to discover more about the Saviour he does not yet know.
  • Pray for the final preparations for the Winter Camp.  We need 2-3 more assistant leaders to help.  Pray for the team coming from Victoria Chinese Alliance Church and the many different ways they will be involved while they are with us.

Wishing You a Wonderful 2019

The end of the year can be a time when some people are discontent.  They had hoped for something different and it did not materialize in the past year.

But Philippians 4 reminds us that the secret of contentment is found in a relationship with Christ, not in circumstances and belongings.

May we all learn to be content in Him this year.

Praise Items

  • Looking back, there are many reasons to give thanks:  two baptisms, a renovated facility, new church members, and a wonderful support team, INCLUDING YOU!
  • Looking at today: there are new expressions of mercy and grace that God is giving.
  • Looking ahead:  there are many reasons to be hopeful.  Camp ministry with short-term teams, sharing on Sundays about “The Abundant Life,” health and strength for each day, and maybe Jesus will come again.

Thank-you for being part of the team taking Hope to those who need it.!

  • Praise the Lord that more than 130 attended the Christmas outreach event.  Please pray as we try to follow-up those who came as a result of an invitation from our church members.

Taking the Message to Others

Some people might wonder why we go to the schools and to the nursing home.

The reason is that we have opportunities to interact with more people by going to where they are,  They will not likely come to an event held at the church building.

Above is the photo of everyone at the nursing home Christmas event.

“Go, into all the world and share the good news.”  Mark 16:15

Help Needed!

We are expecting 35-40 students at the “Inside the Walls of Babylon” Camp January 21-25.  We have just learned that there has been a change of plans, and we must pay for lunches each day for all the students who attend.  In Canadian funds, one lunch costs $2.40. That means we need $420.00 – 480.00 depending on how many students register.  (The additional cost of CAD$140.00 for the teachers’ lunches will be covered by the teachers themselves.)

Would you like to contribute?

It is OK to choose to give enough for just a few lunches.  The funds should be designated as instructed below.  Please do not add additional designations in the comments section.  If you would like you can write us an email and tell us how many lunches you are contributing.  We’d like that.

You can help by giving online and using the drop-down box to designate your gift “Lorne and Kathy-Lu’s Work Fund (6215).”    DONATE

In the event that we receive more than what is needed, we will use the funds to provide for ongoing ministry to these students and their families.

If you are not able to contribute financially at this time, please consider making a contribution of time, praying that the students will come to know Christ as their Saviour through the camp and school ministry.   Send us an email and let us know you will pray. (Taiwanwhites@gmail.com)

Thank-you for your generosity!

Prayer Items

  • Inside the Walls of Babylon”  is the name of the January 21-25 elementary student camp.  The short-term team from Victoria Chinese Alliance Church is making final preparations. Please pray for good communication and that many students will be permitted to attend.  Registration will begin this week.
  • The Sunday School children are practicing a short play that they will do at the Christmas Outreach on December 23.  Please pray that the modern version of the prodigal son will touch their lives and the lives of those who watch them.
As part of the C&MA family, we are very appreciative of your ongoing support to the Global Advance Fund (GAF).  The GAF supports 225+ workers to be living and serving in places all around the globe where there is very little access to Jesus. As we approach year-end, would you consider a special gift to the GAF.  Thank-you.

Why Did You Come?

People join events for different reasons:

  • They want to do the handcraft
  • They want to learn English
  • They want to be with friends
  • They want to learn about Jesus
  • They want to escape being included in something else that is happening

Regardless of the motivation, God is able to breakthrough and help people discover a relationship with Jesus.

Please pray that God will work to reveal Himself to those who are seeking.  Pray that people will be attracted to a relationship with Christ even more than they are drawn to other things competing for their attention.

Prayer Items

  • Praise the Lord that Pastor Joshua’s father is slowly healing after his accident.  Please pray for wisdom in dealing with an under-insured party with regard to the repair of the motorcycle.  Please pray that he will recognize his need for Christ as a result of this incident.
  • Our updated biography is on the C&MA Canada website.  Feel free to check it out.
