Thank-you for praying!

Thank-you for praying for the camp last week.

  • Almost 50 campers enrolled.  Both the campers and the short-term team bonded well and enjoyed themselves.
  • The typhoon did cause cancellation of the activities on Friday.  However we are happy to report that the storm was not as severe in the Baozhong area.  The people are safe.
  • Three local youth were permitted to help the leaders, giving opportunity to practice their English and hear the content of the camp.
  • Please pray for the church as they consider how to have ongoing impact on the campers and their families.

Please pray for Taitung

The typhoon unleashed its full intensity on the city of Taitung (located in southeast part of the island) and surrounding area.

  • Photos show store signs, pieces of buildings, and many trees littering the streets.  Please pray for the recovery efforts and for the Christians who will use this opportunity to serve those affected
  • The roof of the Taitung Alliance Church was damaged.
  • The government is using relief funds in various ways to provide temporary work and other kinds of assistance over the next few months.
  • Many homes and businesses have wind and water damage.
  • Three people are reported to have died and about 140 were injured by the storm.  Please pray for healing and for hearts to turn to the Healer for those who are hurting and recovering from significant losses.

Thank-you for being on mission with God, everywhere, all the time.

CAMP has begun

We are thankful that the short term team from South Gate Alliance (Calgary) is in Baozhong.  They are the leaders in the one-week Elementary Children’s Camp.  Please pray for every aspect of the camp ministry including:

  • The Weather:
    • A tropical storm (a mild typhoon) is approaching Taiwan bringing wind and rain.  The days before it arrives are extra hot, so pray for the short term team who are not used to this heat.
    • The storm is predicted to arrive at the end of the week.  If the government cancels work and classes, the camp for that day will also be cancelled.  Pray that the storm will be delayed so that it does not influence the last day(s) of the camp.
  • The Campers:
    • Pray that each camper will have fun at the camp and learn from the games, crafts, sports, songs, and stories.
    • Pray that the Bible stories will make them desire to believe in Jesus at an early age.
    • Pray that the families of the campers will be open to the message of the gospel being told to the students.
    • Pray that campers and their families will be willing and will desire to attend church sponsored events to learn more about a relationship with Jesus.
  • Albert and Elaine:
    • Pray for physical stamina as they handle the camp logistics (e.g. lodging and meals for the team, liaison with the school, transportation, etc.) in addition to their regular responsibilities
    • Pray for wisdom to know which people need to be followed up, how to do that, and when to do that.

Thank-you for being on mission with God, everywhere, all the time.

Treasure Hunt

With a spirit of excitement and adventure we are ready to open the storage bins to discover what belongings are inside.  We were able to pick up the last of the stored items this last weekend and bring them to where we are living.  It is fun to discover items that we have not thought about for a long time.  Along with those belongings are many special memories.

Treasure of Friends

We were surprised that Pastor Luke and Rachel were visiting (photo) not far from where we are living during home assignment.  We live on opposite sides of the island of Taiwan, so do not see each other frequently.  God gave us the gift of a wonderful day together–walking, talking, laughing, praying together as we enjoyed beautiful weather and Fort Langley’s sights.  Please pray for this ministry couple, and others like them, to be encouraged and have a special empowering from God.  They work in a small church where most ministries are dependent on the pastoral couple’s involvement.  Pray for energy for sustained service and for more believers to come help them.

Thank-you for being on mission with God, everywhere, all the time.

Enjoying Creation

After some days with family, it was good in the past week to enjoy some of God’s handiwork as we drove through the Rocky Mountains.  We also discovered a historical museum that we enjoyed for several hours.  Being reminded of God’s power, and some of our Canadian history is good.  There is a lot to appreciate.

Kudos to the Fathers!

We were not able to be with our own fathers this year, but they were remembered.  We appreciate the legacy that they and other godly men have given us.  It is also exciting to see young fathers, like our son Philip, who are being faithful to raise their children according to biblical principles.  May each and every father, including the spiritual dads, know God’s presence and blessing each day, but especially on this day set aside to honor them.

Mentoring from afar

Although we are in Canada, we still have contact with some friends in Taiwan.  A few are not yet followers of Jesus.  Others are believers but are not connected to a church for various reasons.  Please pray for us as we try to use social media connections to continue relationships with these people.  Pray that our conversations will help them to grow into a deeper relationship with God.

Thank-you for being on mission with God everywhere and all the time.

Family Time

We have been enjoying the opportunity to be on the same side of the Pacific Ocean as our kids.  It is good to spend time talking, eating, and doing recreational activities together.

Taiwan Field Annual Conference

Thanks for praying for the Taiwan conference last week.  We have heard numerous positive reports.  It is interesting to us that the Bible teaching focus was John 15 and 17, similar to the focus of the teaching that we experienced at General Assembly.

God is at work!

It is exciting to hear stories of God at work from friends in Baozhong, Canada, and around the world.  Our presence is not needed for God to work.  He often works answering those who pray.

One of the elementary students who attended the Baozhong Alliance Church children’s event last Saturday wanted the teachers to know that he had made a cross in front of his house.  We see that is a small evidence that God is at work in his heart.  Please pray that he and his family would come to know Jesus better, not just seeking to use Jesus as a good luck charm. Ask God for more spiritual breakthroughs in people’s lives

Thank-you for being on mission with God, and with us, everywhere and all the time.

Arrival

Thank you for praying for us as we travelled back to Canada. It is such a blessing to be able to greet our children and grandchildren.  Since arriving in Vancouver on May 24, we have already seen many friends.  We are thankful for the blessing of all our friends and supporters.

General Assembly

We were privileged to attend the C&MA in Canada General Assembly this past week.  We participated in uplifting worship, heard great teaching and challenges from God’s Word, and watched leaders of our family of churches prayerfully make decisions filled with faith and hope.  Thank-you to those who prayed and for those who were a  part of this important experience.

God is at Work!

It is exciting to hear stories of God at work from friends in Baozhong, Canada, and around the world.  Our presence is not needed for God to work.  He often works answering those who pray.

We have been praying for God to motivate people to give up their idols and invite Jesus into their lives.  Last week Albert and Elaine reported that God gave a mother and daughter the same dream on the same night, encouraging them to remove the idol shelf from their place of business.  They did as God directed in the dream.  Please pray for Jesus to fill this area of their lives, and that they will have a spiritual hunger to want to be in closer relationship with God.

We are also praying that God will intervene so that some women who are interested in believing in Jesus will be given freedom to study the Bible and to attend church sponsored events.  Some family members are pressuring these ladies, even using threats of various degrees of broken relationship, so that they cannot meet with Christian friends nor can they attend church meetings.  We believe Jesus can unlock the doors so that these people can experience spiritual freedom.  Please join us in praying for this.

Thank-you for being on mission with God, and with us, everywhere and all the time.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We were blessed to have visitors join us for our Mother’s Day celebrations this year (photo).  Children participated by making cards for Moms and Grandmas as the adults discussed what it means to love children in a way that pleases God.

Packing, Packing, and more Packing

We are preparing to leave our home to return to Canada for  a one-year home assignment.  Because the church will use different parts of the house for meetings and for short-term lodging, we are sorting items that will be stored and those which will be offered for use in our absence.  Please pray  for us to have wisdom as we make many decisions.

Taipei Visit

Thank-you for praying as Lorne and Albert travelled to Taipei last Friday to meet Mr. Lee.  There was also an opportunity to consult with the pastor of a partnering church and the President of the Bible School.  Please pray that God will continue to lead in the process of requesting Mr. Lee to serve as a weekend intern in Baozhong beginning in October.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and us through prayer.

Last classes!

Lorne completed our commitment to tell Bible stories in the schools last Friday.  Can you tell what story was being told from the collage of photos above?  Please pray for discussions and decisions being made regarding having someone continue to tell stories while we are on home assignment.

How are Taiwan and Germany Similar?

Did you know that Taiwan has one of the lowest birth rates in the world?  The World Factbook lists Taiwan and Germany as being tied for having the eighth lowest birthrate in the world, only 8.47 births per 1,000 people.  Because there are less children, the school boards are making hard decisions to combine schools or even close some.  Fuhsing Elementary, where we have been teaching on Thursday afternoons, is uncertain whether they will be able to find the minimum 8 new students in order to have a first grade class in the Fall.  It is one of the schools that may be pushed into amalgamating with another school.  This will affect not only the children, but also teachers and school administrators.  Please pray for our church planting team as we try to determine how these societal changes will impact our strategies.

May is a Special Month of Prayer

May has been designated as a special month to pray for the evangelization of the Working Class people of Taiwan.  Would you like to join in praying for a special work of God in the hearts of one of the largest unreached people groups in Taiwan?  A 30-Day Prayer Guide will help you do so.  We have customized it with some specific requests for the Baozhong Alliance Church Ministry.

WOW!

What else can we say?  There were 28 children and 10 mothers who attended the Saturday children’s event.  We thought we were adequately prepared and there would be more than enough sun catchers.  It turned out that we had just the right number for each student to do one.  Thank-you for praying.  Please pray that those who attended will understand, remember, and apply the lesson of how to deal with sin in their lives.  Everyone has been invited back for Mother’s Day.  Please pray that at least some of them will come.

Answers to Prayer

Thank-you for praying for things that are needed during our home assignment year.  We are pleased to report that God has supplied both a townhouse to rent and a used car to purchase.  In addition to inviting you to join us in thanking God that these major needs are met, we also want to thank the people who worked hard to help connect us with the landlord and the car owners..

God’s Answers Another Prayer

Last Friday, Kathy-Lu and Elaine were praying during one of their regular prayer times.  As they prayed for the church that is being started, one of the prayers was that we would have women begin to attend.  So far it is only men who have committed to attend regularly.  Two days later, a couple who are  neighbours of Albert and Elaine came to church.  Please pray that “D” and “H” will continue to come as part of their search for life’s answers.  Please pray that other men and women will search for the True God and find Him.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.
