Taiwan – Hidden in Plain Sight Ministry

Facing Transition

We often think that it would be nice to keep the status quo and not need to face change in our lives.  But the Bible and our Christian faith requires us to request God to bring change into our lives.  We want Him to save us, to forgive us, to indwell us, to empower us, to make us more like Jesus, etc.  The stability in our lives is not to come from owning a house or having a long-term career.  We are to rely on God as the one thing in our lives that does not change.

As we make arrangements for our move back to Canada for a one year home assignment, we can feel overwhelmed with decision-making, the filling out of forms, the scheduling of speaking engagements, saying good-bye to friends, etc.  Please pray that we all will find our stability in Christ.

Matzu Pilgrimage

April 8 marked the start of the annual Matzu pilgrimageThe event is to pay homage to a widely worshipped deity and has many cultural events now associated with it.  It is the largest Matzu worshipping event in the whole world.  Although the procession does not pass through Baozhong, it is a major influence on all the towns in west central Taiwan when Baozhong is situated.  Please pray that the True Light of the World (Christ) will push back the darkness and that even during this event people would come to faith in Christ.  Pray that the Jesus-followers in families where this deity is revered will have a strong testimony.  Pray that people will be curious enough to ask about the hope that believers have in Christ.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Facing Fear

Today I read that the phrases “do not fear” and “do not be afraid” appear in the Bible 365 times.  And yet, we often find ourselves reacting because we are “afraid,” “scared,” or “terrified” about something.  The author challenged readers to consider removing such words from our vocabulary.  The reason is that we as believers are to be motivated by faith, by love, and by hope. He claims that removing such words from our speech will change the way we see the world around us.

Tomb Sweeping Day

Today is the Clear and Bright Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day.  For many believers this is a difficult day because family members pressure them to not only respectfully remember those who have passed on, but also to participate in ancestor worship.  Part of the fear comes from being unable to clearly explain why they will not participate in the traditional way.  We are making efforts to help believers know how they can respond to family pressure, how they can pray with and for their families as they honor those who have helped the family become what it is today.  Please pray for Taiwanese believers as they face criticism and even ongoing  anger from family members because of their commitment to worship only Christ. Please pray that they will not respond in fear, but rather with the wisdom that comes from God.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Celebrating Easter

We have been celebrating the resurrection of Christ for a number of days.  When telling the story of the first Easter in the classroom, a student asked:  “After Jesus came alive, did He die again?” After hearing the response that Jesus did not die again and is still alive, he surprisedly asked the follow-up question:  “He is still alive?”  When we answered “Yes! That is why we can trust Him and pray to Him,” the children were very happy and excited.  Please continue to pray that God will use the truth in the stories to create faith in their hearts.

We need HELP!

We are sensing a need to recruit the following people to join our ministry team.  Would you please pray for God to provide the following workers that are needed in Baozhong:

  • MK Teacher – Short-term self-funded native-English-speaker to teach home school curriculum to  two MK girls.  The position is for 9-10 months beginning September 2016.  This is an urgent need.
  • Story-teller – Short-term worker to live in Baozhong and tell English Bible stories to elementary students.  Terms run September through January, and February through June.  This is a need for which we have a strong burden.
  • Taiwanese Coworker – Full-time Taiwanese who is theologically trained and has a burden for those living in the rural area.  The person must be able to work on a team with international workers and desire to use pastoral gifts to help plant and nurture the church.

If you or someone you know is interested in any of the above, please contact us.  We will be happy to share more information about any specific position.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Could you hear the angels singing?

For our Palm Sunday worship we joined together with the Baozhong Gospel Center church.  We witnessed their church’s first baptism, a friend from the community.  We were able to not only worship together but also to share lunch together.  Please pray with us that God will continue to build His kingdom in Baozhong.

Church Mission Strategy Meetings

We were privileged to be a part of this year’s meetings with pastors from most churches in the Taiwan C&MA March 16=19.  This year there was training on how to faithfully manage church finances.  A retired Taiwanese pastor also shared stories and advice about having a pastoral heart in ministry even as we seek for God to add more people to the church.

Successful Surgery!

Thanks-you for praying for Lorne’s father as he had surgery.  The surgery went well.  He is now recovering at home until the implant can be connected. In about a month he will begin therapy to learn to hear with the new devices.

Planning

A lot of energy is going into planning for home assignment.  We are in final negotiations for a furnished townhouse in Abbotsford.  We are planning travel for General Assembly and other meetings that we will need to attend.  In Taiwan, we are beginning the process of transferring responsibilities to other people.  Please pray for wisdom and that this will all go smoothly.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Children’s Club

We were privileged to host the children’s club ministry last Saturday.  Four of the children who came did so for the first time.  Pastor Tsou shared practical life skills and also taught them from God’s Word.  The craft was making crepe paper flowers.  Please pray that the seeds of truth that are planted will lead the children toward belief in Jesus.

This is the Week!

Lorne’s father will be having ear surgery on March 17.  The recovery time, including learning to hear using the newly implanted device will likely be about 8 weeks.  Please pray that the procedure will be without complications and for Dad’s recovery process.

Church Mission Strategy Meetings

The Taiwan C&MA will hold in-service-training and strategy discussions with all its pastors this week.  International workers partnering with them are also encouraged to attend.  Please pray that these.will be times of encouragement, equipping, and affirmation for these servants of God.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Water Stoppage

There were a few days this past week when the water was turned off during the day.  The town was replacing water mains in nearby lanes.  In order to make the improvements, they had to dig up the roads and cut through sidewalks in front of houses.  It is similar with the work that God does in our lives.  Sometimes he needs to remove obstructions in order to supply what is truly needed.  The experience also reminded us to be thankful for the many things we frequently take for granted.

In addition to being without water, Kathy-Lu is waiting for her computer to be repaired. Please pray that the problems will be fixed so that she can once again use it for the many aspects of her ministry assignment.

Iron Sharpening Iron

One of the privileges of serving as international workers in Taiwan is the fellowship and teamwork with those from other sending agencies.  Monday through Wednesday, Kathy-Lu will join with women cross-cultural workers from around the island for seminars and mutual encouragement.  Please pray that this will be an event that encourages the hearts of all who attend.

Special Prayer Requested

Lorne’s father will be having ear surgery on March 17.  The recovery time, including learning to hear using the newly implanted device will likely be about 8 weeks.  Please pray that the procedure will be without complications and for Dad’s recovery process.

Home Assignment – Booking Opportunities to Share

Thank-you for continuing to pray for arrangements being made for housing and transportation while we are on a one-year Home Assignment beginning May 2016.

We are also scheduling times to share in various churches and fellowship group throughout our home assignment year.  We recommend that you or your church contact us early so that the preferred dates can be arranged.  Requests can be sent to us at TaiwanWhites@gmail.com .

Car Fund

We are planning to return to Taiwan in May 2017 for at lest one more four-year term of service.  At that time we will need to purchase a used car for use in our ministry.  If you would like to contribute toward this need, please designate your gift “L&K White – Car Fund.”  You may also use this link to give online.  Thank-you for asking God to supply for our needs in this area.

Thank-you for your ongoing commitment to be on mission together with God and  us through prayer.

Marathon

Recently we were able to see participants in our town’s first ever marathon running down our street.  Residents and volunteers were cheering them on.  There was excitement in the air.  The event was considered a success.  Then news came that one of the participants had collapsed and passed away.  It was not the race that a supposedly healthy person expected to be running that day.  They did not know they would be crossing the finish line at the end of their life before they reached 40 years old. We do not know if they were adequately prepared for eternity.

Acts 4:31 records that the Holy Spirit gave the believers boldness to share the good news about Jesus with others. Our prayer is that God will give all of us that same Holy Spirit boldness to share with others so that more people are prepared for their eternal future.

The Numbers Tell the Story

We have been preparing the 2015 event and attendance report to send to the denomination.  It is exciting to see that people have been added to the church in Baozhong over this past year.  God is working and we are excited to be a part of what He is doing.  Please pray that God will continue to add to the number of people attending. May God also help each of us to grow in our faith in this coming year.

Special Prayer Requested

Lorne’s father will be having ear surgery on March 17.  The recovery time, including learning to hear using the newly implanted device will likely be about 8 weeks.  Please pray that the procedure will be without complications and for Dad’s recovery process.

Home Assignment Preparations

Planning for our return to Canada on May 24 for one year of ministry in Canadian churches is happening.  We are thankful for church friends who are assisting us to find housing and a car.  Please pray for wisdom as they look and advise us.

We are also anticipating returning to Taiwan in May 2017 for another term of service.  At that time we will need to purchase a used car for use in our ministry.  If you would like to contribute toward this need, please designate your gift “L&K White – Car Fund.”  You may also use this link to give online.  Thank-you for asking God to supply for our needs in this area.

2016 #8

Today as I am writing the update there is the noise of firecrackers and the smell of smoke all around us.  Today is when the largest temple in our area celebrates the “birthday” of the 12 gods that are worshipped.  People have come from all over Taiwan to attend the processions and eat some of the specialty rice that hundreds of residents have helped to cook.  This event has been happening for over 100 years.  The eating together is viewed as a “peace meal.”

It is hard to watch the elderly people parading by recognizing that they have done this their whole lives.  They have known nothing else.  They have not accepted the good news of the gospel. It was also hard to see some of our elementary students happily enjoying the festivities.  Our prayer is that the Bible stories and sharing we are doing with them will give them an opportunity to believe in Jesus.

It is a spiritual battle.  No one can come to belief unless God draws them in.  No one can be saved unless they allow God to do a miracle in their hearts.  Please pray that many more will respond to the gospel message in the coming year.

Earthquake Update

Flags are flying at half-mast today as government offices open for the first day of work after the Lunar New Year Vacation.  The country is mourning the 116 people who died in the February 6 earthquake.  Governments have shifted their focus to helping those who have financial hardship because of the quake, repairing damage to water mains, and dealing with buildings that are not safe.  Please pray for wisdom as officials seek to determine blame for some building collapses, and seek to improve building construction standards.

The C&MA does not have churches in Tainan City, the area most affected.  We are hearing that there are churches responding and trying to provide ongoing help to those whose lives have been impacted by the trauma and loss caused by the earthquake.  Please pray that they will find wise ways to help.

Back to School

The students returned to classes today (Feb. 15).  Lorne and Kathy-Lu will begin teaching English and telling Bible stories on Thursday this week.  Please pray that we will be able to use the limited number of opportunities available to us this semester to help the children learn more about Jesus.  This Spring, all of the Bible stories we will tell will be from the gospels.

CNY MonkeyHappy Lunar New Year!

Living in Asia we have the privilege of wishing you New Year’s Blessings twice!  The new year is the the Year of the Monkey (in the 12 year cycle commonly used in Chinese cultures).  Idioms associated with monkeys include:
1.山中無老虎,猴子稱大王 (When there is no tiger in the mountains, the monkey is called the King)
2.猩猩相惜(識英雄重英雄)(Orangutans cherish each other, like one hero respects another)

Monkeys are also known for living in groups.  We are trusting God in this coming year to increase the sense of “belonging-ness” in our church and increase the size of that community.  May that also be true of the Body of Believers of which you are a member.

Prayer Needed!  Major Earthquake

A strong 6.4 earthquake occurred Saturday, February 6 at 3:57 AM, followed by many strong aftershocks.  The epicentre was about 150 km south of where we live.  Major damage including collapsed buildings is in an area about 100 km south of us.  We were awakened by the sounds and the rocking of our bed when it happened.  We are safe and unharmed. Buildings and roads in our area are not affected.  Some items shifted on shelves and fell over.  As we have watched the damage reports from other areas we are aware that small breakage is nothing in comparison to what others have experienced.

As we write this update, more than 300 people have been rescued in the continuous efforts to save people trapped in damaged buildings in Tainan City.  That area reports that more than 500 have been injured, 36 are dead, and more than 100 are still missing.  Please pray for Taiwan and the response to this natural disaster.

We do not have C&MA churches in Tainan City.  Reports so far are that friends and families that we have connection to are all shaken but safe.  This morning we heard that they do not need more clothes, water, and other relief supplies.  People wanting to help are being encouraged to give money.  We have already heard that the Canadian and USA C&MA relief agencies are prepared to partner with churches or groups who will be providing ongoing help to those affected.

As this has happened at the start of the Lunar New Year vacation, people are processing this aspect of life even while they celebrate with their families.  There may be some extra tight hugs this year.  The strength of these tremors has brought to memory people’s experiences in the 1999 major earthquake.  Please pray for us and other Christian believers to have wise words of comfort during this unsettling time.

A Successful Strategic Planning Retreat

Thank-you for praying as we spent two days praying, listening to God, and discussing strategic plans for the Baozhong work.  We came away with a sense that there had been good communication and with a greater sense of unity regarding the major strategies that God is leading us to use.  In faith we say that we will not only be able to report what we plan to do but also the resulting fruit that God gives as we partner in His efforts to love the Taiwanese people.
